Kent - Cornwall Hike and Campout

September 24-25, 2005

What:  A backpacking hike and campout on the Appalachian Trail (“AT”) along the Housatonic River between Kent and Cornwall , Connecticut .

We plan to organize both a shorter hike for those Scouts that are getting started in backpacking.  This will qualify as a 4 mile hike required for the Camping Merit badge.  We are also planning to have a group hike that will hike more challenging terrain and a total distance of about 10 miles, in order to qualify for the 10 mile required for  the Hiking merit badge.

This campout will use the patrol method.  Each patrol needs to plan and bring food for lunch, dinner and breakfast.  Camp fires are not allowed along the AT, so stoves will be required.

Please note that this will be a hiking trip!  The boys should have a backpack and be conscious of its weight.  The boys must wear hiking boots or supportive sneakers; sandals and other open toed shoes will not be permitted.  Please see the Scout Handbook for a list of other camping gear, including tents, mess kits, etc.  Class A uniforms will not be required.

All Patrol Leaders will need a list of their attendees by the time of the Thursday conference call.

We also need to confirm adults as drivers and for supervision - please let Brett Long know if you are interested in participating at 637-0626, or by e-mail at eljagar@yahoo.com .

When:  Friday Night Pack Check:  6:00pm to 7:00pm at the Scout House.  Your patrol should meet here to collect patrol camping equipment including stoves, pots, etc.
