                        Boy Scouts - Troop 9

Fall 2000

 

September

Sleeping Giant Campout - First hike and campout for the 2000-2001 Scouting Season. Sleeping Giant State Park is located in New Haven, we had eight scouts and several parents participate on this initial "shakedown" camping event.

December

Annual Christmas Party - Pack 9 Webelos joined us for an evening of fun and learning.  The Webelos participated in patrol competitions and won the box game!  

2001

January

Campout and Klondike Derby - Annual campout and Klondike Derby competition where we fielded 3 sleds this year for the first time and came in 4th, 5th and 7th out of a total of 25 entries from Troops in the Connecticut, New York area. Five Scouts sleep in outdoor shelters and with rest of the Troop resided in a one room lodge for the evening.  The outdoor shelter was probably the better option as the "snore factor" was significant in the Lodge!

February

Gore Mountain Ski Trip - The Troop ventured to Gore Mountain for ski and snowboard fun.  Many scouts earned the ski and snowboarding merit badges.  Sponsoring parents braved the elements and sustained only a few bumps and bruises!

March

Camp Hoyt Winter Campout - The Troop traveled to Ridgefield CT to Camp Hoyt Boy Scout facility.  The Troop spent the morning working on Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class Scouting skills.  With 12 inches of fresh snow, the breaks from training sessions included snowball fights as well as the construction of snow shelters.  Most of the scouts and adults slept outside in winter snow and survived to tell about it.

Court of Honor - Numerous scouts achieved next level badge rank and merits badges earned during the preceding months.  The Troop is proud of these accomplishments.

Durland Swim Center - The Troop participated in a evening of swim and life saving instruction. Many scouts completed 2nd and 1st Class swim and safety requirements.

Webelos Cross Over, Blue & Gold Dinner - Eleven Webelos from Pack 9 crossed over and earned the Arrow of Light and admission to Troop 9. Scouts from Troop 9 assisted with the crossing over ceremony and welcomed the new Scouts to Troop 9

 

April

Camp Alpine - Troop 9 traveled to the Palisades in New Jersey and spent the day and evening at Camp Alpine. Several Scouts completed the compass and orientation requirements.  A group of scouts and parents hiked to the Palisades Cliffs for a terrific view of the Hudson River and New York City.  The evening as consisted of a meal cooked with a Dutch Oven dinner provided by Mr. Ezell and capped off with a banjo and guitar duet!

Climbing at Go Vertical! - This popular activity was again visited by Troop 9. After some instruction, the scouts scaled the 80ft climbing walls. The event was concluded with a pizza dinner and cake...

May

Seton Spring Camporee - The Troop participated in a day of merit badge instruction and camping activity.  Greenwich Council provided programs and instructors for numerous merit badges including, First Aid, Finger Printing, Auto Mechanics, Fire Safety, Oceanography and more.  Numerous Scouts earned one or two merit badges.

June

Rafting on the Delaware River - A Troop and Family outing to Upstate New York near Port Jervis. Scouts, Parents and Siblings arrived Friday evening.  Saturday afternoon was spent in rafts and canoes.  Scouts were given the challenge to find 2 river fish traps--an easy task for this group!

Court of Honor - Many Scouts achieved badge ranks: Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star an Life.  The Scouts worked hard this spring and the number of advancements reflects their efforts.

 

July

Great Captains Island Campout - The Troop hopped on the ferry out of Greenwich Harbor and rode to Captains Island for an evening of cooking and camping.  A peach cobbler desert was cooked in a dutch oven and the Troop was provided with the special fortune of watch 4th of July fireworks displays from Long Island and Westchester's Playland.  The foghorn sounded every 20 minutes from 11pm onwards...so attaining good sleep was a challenge!

National Jamboree - Troop 9 senior scouts ventured to Virginia to attend the National Jamboree held once every 4 years.  Scouts earned merit badges, participated in numerous activities that include extensive patch trading.

August

Camp Read - This was the second year that Troop 9 traveled to Brant Lake in Adirondacks, to the Westchester - Putam Council's Camp Read Facility.  19 Scouts, Troop 9's largest group ever attended.  Scouts worked on many merit badges, including horsemanship, camping, wilderness survival, rifle shooting, first aid, fishing, wood carving, small boat sailing etc.  Troop activities included caving, zipline, rock climbing, hiking to the top of Mt Stevens. The week was concluded in an idyllic setting next to the lake with tandem roaring bonfires for a Camp Read evening of troop skits, singing and the special flag retiring ceremony.

 

September

Court of Honor - With great pride, Troop 9 awarded a total of 78 merit badges and 2 Star Badges earning over the Summer!  These achievements are tribute to the hard work and dedication of our Scouts, Parents and Troop Leaders.  Troop 9 is proud of these accomplishments and looks to continue to build on our successes.

Sleeping Giant Campout - The listened to the backpack and camping instruction provided by Gregg Delany and was quite successful on the the first hike and campout of the Scouting Season
